STANDARD HANDRAIL ASSEMBLY

                                                   Deck25™  loves the rain

A      Deck25™ Handrail: 25mm x 138mm Smooth Board is fastened to the top of each railpost and at 300mm intervals to top rail. To comply with current Building regulations: if the height of a deck is  greater than 1metre the handrail system must be 1100mm high from deck level.

B      Deck25™ Top and Bottom Rail: 38mm x 88mm x 4.880mm are face fixed to the vertical  rail posts

C      Deck25™ Rail Post: 88mm x 88mm x 1300mm. To be bolted to rim joist or inserted between two floor joists spaced at 89mm and bolted,(2 bolts)

We recommend max distance between vertical rail posts ( in line/ as part of the same handrail system), is 1500mm

D      Deck25™ Spindles: 34mm x 34mm x 1050mm.

Spindles are face fixed to the horizontal rails, (at the top and at the bottom of the handrail assembly).  Small pieces of the spindles can be inserted below the lower rail at 500mm centres  (3 per 1500mm handrail section),  to provide additional support for the horizontal lower rail.

To comply with building regulations (primarily for child safety) Spindles  should be no greater than 99mm apart and the distance between the bottom rail and the deck should be no greater than 99mm. Additional horizontal rails should not be used, (as children can use these as a ladder, potentially putting them at risk of falling off / over the hand rail).

Each 3.15m length of spindle section will provide 3 spindles of up to 1050mm high.

N.B.     Spindles of  contrasting colour to the main deck can be used to great effect.

E Fascia: Deck board 25mm x 138mm or Fascia. Fastened to rim joist

Deck25™ Installation Instructions

The 25 Year warranty will remain unaffected as long as our

recommendations are followed. If in doubt please always contact us to

discuss.

  • Do not use fasteners within less than 25 mm of the board edge otherwise splitting will occur.
  • Use the same tools used for timber to fabricate and install Deck25™ Decking Systems.
  • Domestic installations.   With the 25mm x 138mm deck boards for normal use, support frame joists should be spaced at 350mm centres or less (please see span information table). When laying the timbers at 45 degrees to the support frame the joists should be spaced at  300mm centres or less,

Commercial installations.  With the 25mm x 138mm deck boards for normal use, support frame joists should be spaced at 300mm centres or less (please see span information table). When laying the timbers at 45 degrees to the support frame the joists should be spaced  at 250mm centres or less,

  • Boards should not hang over the rim joists by more than 50mm.

IMPORTANT

NB Whilst there are climatic changes each year please note that

where Deck25™systems manufactured from HDPE are being

installed in environments that enjoy 6-8 hrs of constant hot sunshine,

eg: Southern Spain. Morocco,  Canary Islands.

even on a seasonal basis, joist centres MUST be at 300mm for boards

at 90degrees to joists and 200mm for boards at 45degrees to joists.

This will ensure that high temperatures will not cause localised

sagging  of boards.

Please note that we do recommend that when the grooved surfaces are used that there is a gentle slope (1 in 60)  to one side to allow for surface water to drain away satisfactorily along with surface debris. This helps to keep the deck clean and ensures good traction.

Gapping

  • For optimum water drainage and to allow for proper ventilation, a gap of no less than 3mm and no more than 5mm should be left between the boards and 3 mm at the ends of the boards. These gaps will also allow for material thermal expansion in hot weather.

  • All decks must be a minimum of 150mm off the ground to allow for proper air circulation. Failure to do so may promote the growth of mildew and product failure may result.

Fall     All Decks must have slight fall in them to run rainwater off ( 1in 60 )

The fall must be in the direction of the grooves. ( the rainwater runs

along  the grooves in the deck board).

FIXING

  • Screws MUST be used with Deck25™ particularly screws designed for composite decking. Stainless steel or coated screw type composite fasteners are recommended. Nails must Not be used, this includes ring shank & galvanised nails), as these can leave black marks on the boards. Screw heads should be flush with board surface.

  • When using conventional posi-drive or similar countersunk head screws we recommend pre-drilling  the deck board only with a 3mm – 4mm bit and countersink bit  (drill bit size used is dependant on screw gauge used.)

  • Screws should be no closer to the outside edges of the board than 25mm. Screws should be inserted in the 2nd groove from each side

  • You can also use normal wood glue (external use type) to glue the decking to the joists if necessary. Glue should only be used in conjunction with screws and definitely NOT as a substitute for them.

  • You can router Deck25™ boards just as you can wood. We recommend Carbide blades and bits for any cutting or machining.

  • Painting and staining of Deck25™ using epoxy or oil based paints is possible. We do not  recommend  painting or staining of Deck25™ as  this creates a surface coating and will need re-applying just as it would on a wooden deck.

  • We do offer self drilling  composite screws where pre-drilling is not necessary with the exception of the ends of the boards where pre-drilling is essential

DECK 25 TM Care and Maintenance                   Colour Harmonisation

It may take up to 6 months for the deck shade to completely harmonise

The combination of natural fibres and high density polyethylene in the Deck25™ composite boards may result in slight colour variations between boards, this variation will weather to a slightly lighter, but much more even hue during the first few months; this may take much longer in shaded areas. Deck25™ profiles will then continue to hold their colour with minimal fading for up to 25 years.

With most WPC products there are areas that you should be advised of:

  1. Deck25™ contains Lightfast 7 - 8 series pigments which are globally accepted as being some of the best on the market for UV stability. Colours are good for 25 years.
  2. The High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) element is also UV stable.
  3. The timber element is NOT UV stable and cannot be and therefore will darken initially on the lighter colours of our product range particularly Sand.
  4. There is a slight hint of darkening in Grey and Brown. This is normal and is due to general oxidation of the timber.
  5. Over a period of 6 months or so the wood particles will fade by
  6.  5 to 10% as they do on all WPC products due to UV activity.
  7. NB Slight colour variations are natural within any composite deck product.  These variations are not a product defect and thus are not covered by the product warranty.

  • Deck25™ only needs minimal maintenance to keep it looking great, periodical cleaning using a flat bladed tool / yard brush with medium to soft bristles to keep the board gaps and grooves clear of debris
  • An occasional wash with a mild biological detergent and a brush (or power washer) is all that is required.
  • Do not allow leaves and other debris to lie on the deck surface as this may cause staining and promote surface slime and algae growth
  • When using a barbecue it is recommended that a suitable sheet is placed around the area to protect the deck from oil/grease splashes.
  • Most heavy stains, dirt and mildew can be washed off using a common deck cleaner available from most hardware stores, builder’s merchants, home stores and the like. Oil, grease and other stubborn stains may require the use of a de-greasing cleaner or may need light sanding to remove the stain.

  • General: Simply keeping the deck clean, free of debris and maintaining drainage and ventilation gaps should allow you to enjoy your deck for many, many years.

Handling & Storage

  • Deck25™ is heavier and more flexible than most timbers and this needs to be considered when transporting boards.
  • Boards should always be stored on a flat surface or on a close boarded, full length pallet with bearer centres of 900mm or less for up to 1000 kilos full pallet weight and 600mm centres or less up to a maximum of 2500 kilos full pallet weight.
  • If storing boards outside for any length of time, ensure they are covered with a tarpaulin or other waterproof membrane to prevent staining.

Warranty Details

TROUBLE SHOOTING GUIDE

Effect

Probable Cause
Action(s) Required

Colour variation after

installation

This is to be expected prior to natural weathering

Once the material has been exposed to the elements for a few months, the colour should even out to a weathered-wood look.

Colour variation after

weathering

Darker areas may be exposed to less weathering

In dry weather, wet the darker areas with water to accelerate the weathering effect. If the area suffers from constant shade, use a mixture of bleach and water applied using a spray to achieve the weathering required.

Water puddles

An un-even support structure, incorrect fall

inadequate gapping or clogged gaps between boards

An un-even support structure,

inadequate gapping or clogged

gaps between boards

Ice or snow build up

Water puddles followed by

below-freezing conditions

Use calcium chloride to melt ice and snow,

rock salt is not recommended.

Oil/grease stains

Oil stains, barbecues, food etc.

Remove oil/grease stains with a household

de-greasing product as soon as possible. If the stain has been allowed to set, lightly sand the area with a fine-grit paper.

Heavily soiled area

Foot traffic, airborne dust, pets etc.

Use a cleaner containing phosphoric acid.

Allow cleaning agent to soak in for 20 minutes or so before rinsing deck.

Mould/mildew

Appears in areas where moisture lingers (eg, poorly drained or heavily shaded areas and under deck furniture)

Clean the surface with a conventional deck

cleaner containing detergent and sodium hypochlorite (chlorine based bleach).

Allow cleaning agent to soak in for 20 minutes or so before rinsing deck.

Rust marks

Low quality fasteners, ferrous

objects such as garden furniture
